Universal Audio Ruby ’63 is a 1960s British tube combo emulation in a stompbox, running the UAFX dual engine with cabinet, microphone and room tones derived from the OX Amp Top Box. It carries a hot rod treble booster, a preamp boost and speaker swaps, plus free additional downloadable cabinets and mics on registration.

The British chime, with the treble booster already in the box.

UAFX pedals come out of the same modeling work as UA’s plug-ins. The company measures specific units rather than product categories, which is why its descriptions name a particular amplifier or a particular tape machine rather than a style. The dual-engine processing in these pedals is what allows that detail to run in a stompbox rather than on a computer.

The cabinet, microphone and room emulations come from the OX Amp Top Box, UA’s reactive load box. That matters because those emulations were built for a product whose entire job was replacing a miked cabinet, not added to a pedal afterward.

The UAFX Control app handles what the four knobs cannot. Footswitch behavior, preset recall and archiving, additional downloadable speaker cabinets and microphones, and artist presets all live there. Current pedals support MIDI over USB along with Bluetooth and hardwired connections.

Which Amplifier Is Ruby ’63 Based On?

A 1960s British top boost tube combo, the amplifier behind the chiming, midrange-forward sound of British invasion and jangle guitar. The top boost circuit is the specific voicing being modeled rather than the amp’s basic channel.

Who Is Ruby ’63 For?

Players chasing British sixties chime and the jangle that came out of it, and anyone whose rig has always run a treble booster in front of that amp. The hot rod treble booster is included rather than being another pedal on the board.

Can I Use It in Front of a Real Amp?

Yes. The cabinet and microphone emulations bypass, which leaves the amplifier emulation running into a real amp as a preamp and overdrive stage. That is a common way to use these pedals when there is already a good amp in the room.

What Does the UAFX Control App Add?

Footswitch customization, preset recall and archiving, free additional downloadable speaker cabinets and microphones on registration, and artist presets. The pedal supports MIDI over USB along with Bluetooth and hardwired connections, and the app enables footswitch modes carrying four onboard amp presets.

Why Universal Audio?

Universal Audio was founded in 1958 by M.T. “Bill” Putnam, the engineer who built the first recording console with integrated equalization and effects sends, and who designed the 1176 and the 610. The company was revived in 1999 by his sons and now does two things: it still hand-builds analog hardware in California, and it licenses and models the classics from Neve, API, Manley, SSL, Lexicon, Studer, Ampex and others rather than emulating them without authorization.
