This is a vinyl LP pressing of Third by Soft Machine, a double album showcasing the band’s transition from rock to a more jazz-influenced sound. Released as a pivotal work in their career, it features one composition per side, including two by Mike Ratledge and one each by Hugh Hopper and Robert Wyatt. The album blends fusion jazz with electronic effects, especially in Ratledge’s pieces, while Hopper’s “Facelift” and Wyatt’s “Moon in June” add complexity with dynamic rhythms and satirical lyrics. Third is a milestone in the band’s exploration of new musical boundaries, pushing rock into uncharted territory without being self-indulgent.
