Universal Audio Volt 2 is a 2-in / 2-out USB audio interface with 24-bit and 192 kHz conversion, UA’s Vintage Mic Preamp mode voiced after the classic 610 tube preamp, and 48 V phantom power. It is bus powered and class-compliant, so it works with Mac, PC, iPad and iPhone using the included USB-C to USB-A cable.

Two UA preamps in something that fits beside a laptop.

September offer

Free StreamPath HC40 headphones with every Volt interface

Order any Universal Audio Volt interface from Victory this month and we add a pair of StreamPath HC40 closed-back monitoring headphones to the box. No code needed. The HC40 runs a 50 mm dynamic driver at 32 Ohms, so it drives straight off the Volt headphone output with nothing in between.

Offer ends 30 September 2026, while supplies last. See the StreamPath HC40

Volt is Universal Audio’s answer to the question of what a first serious interface should be. The conversion runs at 24-bit and 192 kHz, the preamps are UA’s own, and the build is metal rather than plastic, which is not where most interfaces at this level spend their money.

Vintage Mic Preamp mode is the part people buy it for. A switch puts the input through a circuit voiced after UA’s 610 tube preamp, adding the saturation and low-end weight that the 610 is known for. It is analog hardware in the signal path, not a plug-in applied afterward, so it is there whether or not a computer is involved.

Everything is class-compliant, so it works with a Mac, an iPad or an iPhone with no driver installation. Windows uses the ASIO driver from UA Connect. Direct Monitoring gives latency-free monitoring while recording, and every Volt ships with a software bundle including LUNA.

How Many Things Can I Record at Once With Volt 2?

Two, on separate channels. That covers a vocal and a guitar, an interview with two microphones, or a stereo pair. Both inputs take microphone or line level and both have Vintage Preamp mode.

Who Is Volt 2 For?

Two-person podcasts, singer-songwriters recording voice and guitar together, and anyone whose first interface needs to handle more than one source. It is the most common Volt for that reason.

What Does Vintage Mic Preamp Mode Actually Do?

It switches the input through an analog circuit voiced after UA’s 610 tube preamp, adding the saturation and weight that preamp is known for. It happens in hardware before conversion, so it is not a plug-in and it does not need a computer to be in the path. The switch is per channel, so it can be left off when a clean signal is wanted.

Will It Work With an iPad or iPhone?

Yes. Volt is class-compliant, so Mac, iPad and iPhone need no driver installation. Windows systems use the ASIO driver available in the UA Connect app. Check UA’s current system requirements for the operating system version, and call 844-687-4208 if you want that confirmed.

Why Universal Audio?

Universal Audio was founded in 1958 by M.T. “Bill” Putnam, the engineer who built the first recording console with integrated equalization and effects sends, and who designed the 1176 and the 610. The company was revived in 1999 by his sons and now does two things: it still hand-builds analog hardware in California, and it licenses and models the classics from Neve, API, Manley, SSL, Lexicon, Studer, Ampex and others rather than emulating them without authorization.

Can I use it without a computer?

The preamps and Vintage mode are analog and sit before conversion, but Volt is a computer interface and needs a host to record. The Volt 876 additionally offers a standalone ADAT mode as an 8 by 8 preamp expander.
